The air in the car was thick with unspoken tension. Sarah drummed her fingers on the steering wheel, her gaze fixed on the road ahead. Michael, in the passenger seat, could sense the agitation radiating from her. His jaw was clenched, his shoulders tight. He noticed the way her knuckles had turned white and she seemed to be holding her breath.

He’d asked her, gently, about the phone calls. Each time she’d denied anything was amiss, the denial coming too quickly, too sharp. The radio played a cheerful pop song, a jarring contrast to the turmoil churning inside him. He felt pinned down, stuck in a situation he didn't know how to navigate.
